Watch out Singapore Banks.
June 18, 2001
INTRODUCTION:
To the government, there is only enough space in Singapore to support at most one or two big banks. But it is also obvious that if the MAS make no attempt to preserve one or two standing local bank, there would not be any locally owned bank.
This map paint a scenario of the hostile winds blowing against the outcome of even one large domestic bank, suggesting that the government may have to rethink what is the role of banks for the economic security of Singapore.
The chances of success of MAS strategy are not high. It would be prudent to have a Plan B that redefines the institution of the bank in Singapore such that our economic interest is safe guarded. It is time to be creative and innovative.
